Trucks and trailers
From
For several months, a small group of people at SCS Software has been working on a skunkworks project that we call Trucks & Trailers. We used the project to develop and test new graphics technology and new concepts. But our ambition was also to evolve the gameplay prototype into a complete game. A game that would not be as complex and full featured as our bigger simulator series, yet provide enough fun. A game concentrating on one specific skill that every truck driver needs to master - navigating tight spaces with the tractor-trailer. It's a very straightforward concept - no company management, not even point A to point B cargo delivery, just pure game of skill. Initially we viewed in narrowly as a game packed with park-this-truck-here types of challenges, but over time we have expanded the view to include also drive against the clock through various obstacle courses. Translation in full swing
Again, we are humbled. In a few short hours, the translation has already progressed a lot even during the test stage. So far the technical side looks good, too, we can pull the translated strings from the system just fine.
We are opening the translation to the whole community, we don't want anybody who felt like contributing to feel ignored.
Please start by visiting this page: http://www.trucks-and-trailers.com/localization.html
The game is still in the polishing stages of the development. Regarding the in-game texts, this means that as the User Interface is still changing, some text may still be changed, or erased, or added. But large majority of the text is already in place, and the system supports further tweaks.
As more people join in the translation effort, inevitably we'll start seeing conflicts and clashes. Each piece of text, be it a simple word or a full sentence, can be translated by multiple people in parallel. Then people can vote on each other's translation or mark a translation as problematic. This process may bring some frustration as people may start arguing over who's translation is the best. We still hope that this can be overcome by the collective wisdom of the community and that the best quality wins.
To thank you, here is a few more pictures from Trucks & Trailers. Thank you very very much!

The Great Translation Experiment
The community translation experiment has been running for a few days, and we can already reflect on the experience.
First of all, big thanks to anybody who decided to participate. Over 260 people joined the collective effort so far, and you can imagine that it can boost our confidence in the power and health of the truck simulator fan community when we see so many people trying to actively help.
What we are going through is not only a technical experiment, but to a large extent also a social experiment. We certainly did not expect the massive flow of input from the Turkish fans. We were surprised to see so much difference in activity between neighbor countries, like between our own Czech Republic or Slovakia. We did not expect people to try to "help" and use Google Translate to contaminate the effort with nonsense translations. We did not expect people to start competing translation of the same language if a translation sub-project was already under way. So in a lot of ways, we have learned a lot not only about quirks of the GetLocalization system and user interface, and about regional variety of the fan community, but also about people's behavior in general.
As for various smaller and bigger problems... some things could have been expected, but we really did not anticipate many of the problems. The GetLocalization system has potential to be a great tool, but there are still some teething problems to overcome, and the technical issues influenced the cooperation a lot.
It would be great if there was some support for moderating the translation rather than having it running as complete anarchy. It would also be preferably if we had initially control over which languages are allowed for translation, as in many cases two parallel sub-projects were started and lots of effort was spent twice. It would be useful to be able to send messages to individual translators, to have notice-boards or communication channels for individual languages... The feature wish-list that we communicated to GetLocalization guys is very long. For technical reasons, in the end we had no other choice but to merge the competing same-language sub-projects and rely on the voting system to let the best translations rise to the top. We couldn't just "kill" any of the competing sub-projects to have all the effort in them go to vain, we don't understand the languages enough to be the judges.
We are far from done. Maybe fatigue is already setting in, perhaps many of you were sorry to see the little flame wars between over-competitive translators, but please bear with us. Things are still settling down in many languages, but it's not over. In fact (to a large extent thanks to intelligent discussions among and with you) we'll be throwing in a wave of updated texts soon so some of the terms will have to be re-translated. We also need to come up with a way to visualize the results for you, probably through sets of screenshots in each language, so that you have feedback on problems. In many cases, words or sentences are too long and don't fit into the designated areas, so a lot of polishing is still ahead of us.
We are sure that the team at GetLocalization will continue to improve their system, and we'll use the lessons learned from Trucks & Trailers if we decide to involve the community again in translation of Euro Truck Simulator 2. Original post @: Blog scs software

State of translations - what a difference a week makes
Last week at this moment, some 200 people were hard at work translating Trucks & Trailers. Today, only a few of the most loyal are still trying to polish the translations. Several languages are still unfinished, or almost but not quite complete, and we are still hoping for the final push. Please stay with us, as we are closer to the finish line, now is the time to help to tidy the translations up. We appreciate your support and help very much.
It has been indeed a very interesting experiment, and I hope many of you are enjoying it. We have witnessed (even if not always completely understood) very active discussions in some language groups, like for example in German or Russian, and it seems that those guys really are trying very hard to make their translations superb quality. We have witnessed (and not understood at all) some controversy (like fighting groups in split Turkish translations), but we hope that in the end the results will be worth it.
We may still need to pass the results through professional proofreaders, the quality and especially the consistency may not be 100%, but our overall impression is very positive. Consider that the community is giving itself a major gift. Even if the translations end up not being perfect, when did you last play a game on day of release localized into Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian or Norwegian Bokmål as well as Nynorsk? T&T may be quite unique in this regard. And yes, you may be helping us in the selfish capitalist goal of making as much money as possible though sales to people who wouldn't understand the game otherwise. But the way we work, with everything being reinvested straight into future vehicle simulators, you are actually investing your sweat equity into helping us make our future games better, complete them sooner, and make them understandable to more people. THANK YOU!

We are still polishing the game, and still adding or changing a few words here or a few words there in the original English text, so the translations are under constant changes, too.
We feel very good now about the quality of translation in many languages, but you can still help to make things even better. Thank you!

Final touches on Trucks & Trailers
Quote :
We have to apologize for the lack of updates in the past days, we have been extremely busy. We have to finalize the game for retail release by the end of this week.
Many people are asking about T&T release date. This question doesn't have a simple answer; there is not a single world-wide release date as might be the case with big AAA games published by global publishers. We have country-by-country partnerships in place, and each of those local distributors will work according to their own schedule. We already have several territorial distribution deals signed, and are still trying to work on more.
So far we are pretty optimistic that the game will launch in the middle of June in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Hungary, France and United Kingdom. Chances are some other local editions will hit the same release window too - Russia, Scandinavia. If you do not see your country mentioned above, we are sorry, but either something is blocking the business, or in many cases we cannot even find a company interested in publishing our games in the territory. This is surprisingly a problem even in countries where we know we have a huge number of fans, like Turkey or Romania. But we are not giving up and are still trying hard to negotiate additional distribution deals.
As for the digitally distributed edition of the game which will give players access to the community translations, we will release it about the same time. We cannot release it much sooner, retail stores do not like to see digital distribution damaging their business too much, and they would see this earlier release date as unfair competition. We still rely a lot on brick-and-mortar store sales, this is where most copies are sold, so we need to treat retail distribution with full respect.
The Trucks & Trailers team is so busy now that we'll wrap this blog posts with images from the other project; ETS2. It's not too hard to guess where they are from...

Trucks & Trailers about to go "Gold"
Quote :
At long last, we are starting to produce final CD masters and giving them to our territorial distribution partners this week!
It has been a long road to get this far. Trucks & Trailers started as a small research project, but in the end a small team at SCS Software spent well over half a year turning the initial concept into a well polished game. Thank you for being with us along the way.
We are grateful to everyone who decided to get involved and helped with the collective translation effort. Most languages are almost done, as you can see at http://www.getlocalization.com/truckstrailers/. When we release the digitally distributed version, which should hopefully be ready in a couple of weeks, it will be great that truck fans across the globe will have access to so many language options in the game.

Trucks & Trailers - our job is not over yet
Quote :
As the various retail distribution masters are finalized (in the game industry jargon, the game is said to "go gold"), we still have some work to do. We are also working on new digital distribution strategy, using a new payment partner, so hopefully it should be possible to purchase the game not just with a credit card, but also with PayPal, and as we are told with additional no-so-usual payment methods as well. We still need to do some additional programming to make this happen, but we hope to be ready with the online time-limited demo version at the same time as the game hits the store shelves in CD editions.

The benefits of fanbase
Quote :
For a long time, SCS Software used to be quite a closed company. We worked behind closed doors in a little dinky office, and we worked very hard on the games. But we would only come to surface very seldom - to release a game or two per year at most - and then lock ourselves back in the office again to work on another game. We would read message boards and e-mails from our fans, but there was no two-way communication, and no feedback loop.
Things have changed a lot now that we have this blog, several Facebook pages for our recent projects, a YouTube channel, a Twitter account, the GetLocalization experiment, and most importantly now that our attitude is that fans are our most important asset.
This attitude change bears fruit for us, too. After asking our fans for recommendation for a distributor in Brazil, today we are signing a deal with Techdealer, Brazilian games distribution company, to release a bundle of our older games in the country. Hopefully Trucks & Trailers, which is a logical choice as it has already been translated into Brazilian Portuguese with your help, will be discussed next.
Yesterday we have received good tips for distribution opportunities in Bulgaria, and we will try these contacts to see if we can get official coverage for our games there. It turns out that our fans know their countries' state of games market much better than we can ever do, so with your help we can explore things that we would now have the capacity to try and research on our own.
There are still quite a lot of countries where our games are impossible to buy in stores, and where we know we have fans, but where we haven't managed to identify proper partner to talk to about distribution opportunities. To mention a few, we know we have tons of fans in Romania, Greece and Turkey, but we either don't know whom to talk to there, or if we do know, our attempts to establish contacts there failed so far. Perhaps somebody reading this blog may be able to provide another useful tip for us?
